In collaboration with Belgian photographer Daniil Lavrovski, Gesture Systems produced original cover artwork and stage backdrops with custom wordmark and type treatment for Sweet Boy, the sophomore release from Belgian punk band SONS, fresh off their 2022 tour with Jack White and Rise Against. The custom type was designed to match the record’s sinister lyricism, while Lavrovski’s emotive portrait of Aren Welvaert reinforced the “sweet boy” narrative, capturing the tension between youthful vulnerability and the tough expectations for archetypal masculinity. Woven into the work was SONS’ fixation with snakes as symbols—from the real snake draped across Welvaert’s shoulders for the cover image, to interpretation of serpentine forms and movements in the type.
